Osteopathy is an independent, separate field of medicine which aims to stimulate a person’s general abilities to self-regulate and self-heal.

An osteopath uses their hands both for clinical examination and treatment.

Osteopathy assumes that relations between body’s systems are so big that they shouldn’t be approached separately, and treatment should include all of them at once.

Osteopathy has three main pillars:

  • Structural (treatment of bones, muscles, ligaments)
  • Viceral (digestive tract, liver, pancreas, bladder)
  • Cranial (skull bones and their junctions).

In many countries the osteopath is a primary contact specialist – that means they are obligated to an interdisciplinary approach with other branches of medicine. They have an obligation to provide best medical care for the patient.

What is an osteopathic treatment?

STRUCTURAL PILLAR

It is mainly manual therapy. Osteopathy uses different mobilization, manipulation, oscillation, harmonic neuromobilization and soft tissue techniques in order to achieve natural mobility and self-healing of the organism.

VISCERAL PILLAR

Is based on examining and treating inner organs together with their specific ligament and fascial system. The therapy is based on using soft and delicate techniques directed directly or indirectly at a patient’s problem. It is worth noting that the osteopath frequently works on the afflicted region indirectly, so the patient shouldn’t be surprised if the therapist works for example at the spinal region, when their problem is located at their knee.

CRANIAL PILLAR

It concerns the diagnosis and treatment of skull bones and their junctions.

How to prepare for an osteopathic treatment?

During the clinical examination and the therapy the osteotherapist uses only their hands.

The first visit includes a thorough medical interview. The patient should take with them:

  • All imaging diagnostics (e.g. X-ray, MRI, CT scans)
  • Epicrisis from the hospital
  • USG descriptions
  • Other data regarding up-to-date diagnostics and treatment of a said ailment.

The next part of the visit is clinical examination, including visual and palpation (by touch) examination.

It is important to take comfortable, unrestricting clothing and personal hygiene.
