What is an implant?
An implant is a titanium element permanently placed in the jawbone or maxilla. Titanium is a material that is fully accepted by the body, so it can quickly integrate with the bone. After a few months the implant is fully integrated with the bone, and can be used as a natural, lasting foundation for a prosthodontic restoration. Currently, implantation is a standard procedure in case of tooth loss.
Order of operations
First appointment
The first visit’s purpose is to define the procedure conditions. A panoramic radiograph (or a cone tomography) is taken to help plan the procedure. Next, the extent, type and number of implants is determined, as well as the type of prosthetic restoration (usually both the temporary and permanent). This appointment’s result is a treatment plan containing a list of procedures, schedule of the treatment and its costs.
Second appointment – the actual procedure
The process of implantation is placing a titanium element in the bone and stitching the gum. The procedure is completely painless thanks to a local anesthesia, just like any other dental treatment. For a single tooth, the implantation process takes about an hour. After the appointment Patient can leave the clinic and even drive a car by themselves. After about a week the stiches have to be taken out.
Subsequent appointments
Implants remain in the bone for about three months. It is a period of osseointegration, i.e. the process of the bone fusing with the implant. The next step is reveal of the implant and screwing in a healing abutment, which is preliminarily shaping the gum surrounding it. The gum then assumes an appropriate shape for the crown to be attached. After 2 weeks the prosthodontic restoration can be started. Impressions are made, and the shape, size and color of the future crown is determined.
Next, in a dental laboratory an abutment connection screw is designed (a connection between the implant and the crown), and the final prosthodontic restoration which looks like a real tooth is manufactured.
During the final appointment the dentists places the prosthodontic restoration in a Patient’s mouth. The abutment connection screw is screwed into the implant and a crown is attached, unless a different prosthodontic solution had been chosen (e.g. bridge, prosthetic restoration).
Hygiene after the appointments
Special attention should be paid to the oral hygiene after the appointment. The implantation region is especially sensitive and delicate, so it requires additional care. During the healing period hard foods should be avoided. It is crucial not to try to touch the implants, not to check the firmness, play with the tongue or suck on the mucosa.
Smoking is very much discouraged, as nicotine disrupts the healing processes and increases the implant rejection probability.
During the first weeks it is advised to carefully brush with a soft toothbrush, especially around the implantation area, and to use an oral rinse. Later, after the gums have healed, using an irrigator is recommended, as it elevates the mouth hygiene.
Regular control and hygiene appointments are an important part of the treatment which is crucial to maintain the effects, so patients stay under our care for years after the implantation.
